When we step off of the well-traveled path of our daily routine, there is an uncertainity in our lives that challenges us to look at life from a different perspective. In our travels, we go where many others have gone before. These notes are about the ordinary, yet magnificant things we can experience in our everyday lives as we step from our daily routine and walk another well-traveled path worn by the footsteps of others.
It’s a paradise alright. The snorkeling is great; the gardens beautiful, Rum Point is laid back and Georgetown is for shopping. If you are looking for beautiful beaches, stay close to resorts because they pick up the trash that washes ashore in front of their facilities. Cruise ships and other ships at sea dump their trash into the sea. The result is a never ending mass of incredible trash on the beaches. Cayman residents pick up tons of trash in this battle of more and more trash washing ashore.
If you take a cruise, you can make a point about the trash. You can ask questions about how they dispose of their trash. You can ask them if they dump trash in the ocean. It’s not a matter of out of sight, out of mind. If you think you trash breaks down in that deep dark salty water, take a look at these recent photos taken on Grand Cayman Island.
I have other videos of trash. Nags Head is in my home state North Carolina and I couldn’t believe the trash.
If you bring it to the beach, take it home. If you take a cruise, make sure they take it home.
We traveled to Grand Cayman for a week in January, 2008 and had a terrific time. This was our first trip to the islands and we were not disappointed. The weather was great, although a bit windy for a day or two.
If you enjoy snorkeling, diving and taking underwater photographs, this place should be on your list of places to visit. I’ve put together several videos that are hopefully entertaining and that take a look at the area, some of the activities and another less pleasant issue.
Snorkeling is great. We took a day trip with Captain Marvin’s crew and had a great time. There were lots of beautiful fish, coral and stingrays. The visit to Stingray city is a must for grown up and kids. It’s a little spooky at first but it’s something you will remember for the rest of your life.
Nichol was the videographer for our trip. You can purchase a video of the trip for $60 that has great footage of the fish and you as you gracefully glide through the water. The video arrived a week or so after we returned. The great thing about the video is that you can rip it and make your own vacation video. Edit out the other people and you have a personal vacation video that cuts to the important scenes, i.e. you and the fish.
I used Easy Media Creator 10 Suite to rip and remix the video. A 30 minute video became a 9 minute 30 second video that was posted on YouTube. Visit and take a look. You’ll want to slip into your flip flops, head to a beach and snorkel!
If you go to Kona, Hawaii, you'll be caught up in the droves of folks who learn to snorkel. Almost every beach is filled with live people floating face down in the water. What are these people seeing as they lie face down in the water with a little tube sticking out of the water beside their head. Why would anyone lie face down in the water in the Kona sun and deliberately burn? The beautiful tropical fish and the lumbering turtles capture your hearts and imagination.
I, like many others, made an entrance into the water that was less than elegant. Once in the water, I was immediately wanting to take pictures so that I could capture the images and share this experience with family and friends. The snorkeling rental stand on shore was selling "throwaway" underwater cameras. I was hooked.
I shot a roll of film and learned that you really have to carefully frame the scene in the viewfinder. I had the roll developed at Wal-Mart while I shopped, so I knew immediately what I needed to do to get better shots. The throwaways at Wal-Mart were half the price that I paid at the snorkel rental store. I picked up a second camera for $8 and headed back to the fish.
This time there was greater success. So bottom line, for a cheap camera, the results were ok. You do need a little help from photoshop to maximize the results and correct the color.
